"2014 - a year of war, revolution, plague, international tensions, mystery, tragedy, sporting spectacle and triumphover adversity. World Review 2014 begins with Ukraine, a domestic struggle which morphed into a global crisis, and saw relations between Russia and the West deteriorate to alow point not seen since the Cold War. In the Middle East, the year saw the terrifying rise of the Islamic State as anew force in the region while Israel and the Palestinians renewed hostilities in Gaza. Ebola also took centre stage as the disease took its toll in West Africa and beyond. Asia had its fair share of moments this year, with the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines 370 and the sinking of a South Korean ferry some of the more troubling stories from the region. In China, high profile officials felt theheat of an anti-corruption crackdown while the ruling Kuomintang got hammered in local Taiwan elections. In America, the death of a black teenager, at the hands of police, was among several high-profile cases which highlighted the divisions of race and class that continue to cause problems in the U.S. The UK narrowly avoided breaking in two as Scotland voted to stay in Britain. In Africa, Boko Haram became a household name in Nigeria after the group staged a mass kidnap of hundreds of schoolgirls while South Africa was in thrall as Oscar Pistorius went on trial for killing his girlfriend. Last, but not least, this year was also when football fans enjoyed the spectacle of the World Cup in Brazil"--TVB's website.
